You can play futsal with only a ball and a pair of shoes. You can play without a net or a goal post in an improvised field. But professionally, futsal is played on a hard court, between two teams of five players each. There are goalkeepers; but one of each team’s players can also act as a “goalie” at any given moment. It’s simplicity in requirements is what makes it popular, but there are some necessities in terms of equipment.
The Ball
Today, you can purchase a futsal ball that has the same size and weight of a regular soccer ball. However, it is made of a different material so that it bounces better on artificial turf and can be kicked harder without fear of breaking. Futsal balls are usually black or white in color and have bright orange stripes around them to help differentiate them from regular soccer balls.
The Shoes
The shoes you choose are one of the most important pieces of equipment you will use in a game, so make sure they fit right. Shoes should be comfortable, but not too soft; lightweight and made of synthetic materials; easy to clean and repair; as well as maintainable.
Your shoe choice can make or break your play on the court. Make sure you take the time to find a pair that works best for your foot shape, playing style (e.g., aggressive vs. conservative), and personal preference before buying them!
Shin Pads
Shin pads are important for safety, and these can be worn by all players, regardless of age. It is commonly believed that younger players should wear knee pads as well as shin pads, but this is not always necessary. However, it is recommended that any player who feels they need extra support should consider wearing them. Elbow pads (and sometimes wristbands) are also worn by some futsal players to provide further protection from injuries.
Elite level futsal players often wear headgear to prevent head injuries – especially if their team plays on artificial grass pitches that can be more dangerous than natural ones.
Futsal is an easy sport to get started in. You just need a ball, some shoes, shin pads and you are ready to go! A lot of people choose not to wear shin pads because it can be too hot but if you prefer the safe option then I would suggest them. The most important thing with futsal is that you enjoy yourself. If not then what’s the point?
